On the final day of her second life, Edie returns to the family she abandoned five years earlier. Edie is not merely a vampire, she’s a Goddess…one of the vanishing race of beings the vampires need to keep their kind alive. But being dead has taught her much about life, and Edie’s determined to destroy the evil thing she’s become. For something has changed within her, something almost alive in her dead soul. But can a single spark in the darkness be enough to save all she holds dear?

Pete's Interview:
"Q: What do you think about the direction that the vampire legend has taken over the past few years?"
Let me start off by saying, I’m really glad young people are reading. And I don’t want to blast any author. I’m not glad, however, that an alarming number of teens think it would be fun to date a vamp, if such things existed. So I’m mixed. There are still good vampire novels being written, works that expand and subvert the mythos. For instance, THE PASSAGE by Justin Cronin is terrific. But I recently read that Neil Gaiman (one of my favorite contemporary authors) scrapped a planned vampire novel because the whole notion had become too common. That makes me sad. I suspect that we missed out on a great piece of fiction.
"Q: What inspired you to write A SPARK IN THE DARKNESS?"
A SPARK IN THE DARKNESS started as a novel called NEVER MINE that was inspired by a strange hybrid of films. One night I was re-watching Win Wender’s beautiful film PARIS, TEXAS, and I asked myself, “What if this were a vampire story?” The next day I re-visited John Carpenter’s ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13.The two got married in my brain and wouldn’t leave me alone for a couple weeks. The finished product has little in common with either, but those were the seeds. I scrapped the project titled NEVER MINE because it wasn’t working on the page. Later, I started writing a short story that began with a girl in a bar, something I never intended as a vampire tale, and the opening bits of SPARK just poured out. I snatched the outline for NEVER MINE, yanked the good stuff from it, and changed my direction.
"Q: Why made you decide to make A SPARK IN THE DARKNESS a novella instead of a novel?"
The story I wanted to tell wasn’t novel length, and I didn’t want to slow the pace because that would cheat the reader. I wanted this one to grab people by the throat! Also, I see A SPARK IN THE DARKNESS as a film. The novella is the perfect fit for faithful adaptation. Novels generally require major restructuring to become movies. With SPARK, the structure is already cinematic. I plan to write the screenplay soon.
That was so much fun! Love the genesis of "Spark" and also the tour of the Giglio's domain. Really enjoyable -- feel free to bump it onto my FB page, Dale. And a great job, as always!
ReplyDeleteLove the lair! Sorry to see authors desert vamps. The mythos runs deep. Thanks so much for the great interview. : )
ReplyDeleteAlways a blessing to see your smiling face, Gregory.
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading, Tara!
When it comes to good vampire stories, I usually prefer something dark. To me that is what vampire stories are all about! I think a lot vampire fans feel that way.
When I have a few bucks, I am modeling my book shelves after yours, Peter. And love the James Bond poster. I have the wallpaper on my computer, but seeing it framed on a wall brings back movie magic memories!
Nice, now I now a bit more 'bout you Pete, including your Man Cave!!! Love the pics!!
ReplyDeleteI need to redo my man cave! I am so jealous ;^P
