Author Adam Millard

Today, one of the coolest authors in the field, one of the best editors to work for, and all around one cool cat, Adam Millard joins me! This man, can write, edit, design amazing covers, with the help of his gorgeous half, Zoe, run a press, and have family time. The Millard Clan are amazing people, and I am honored to have Adam here today!

THE INTERVIEW:

As always, I love having you on my blog, tell us about your book, The Susceptibles.

The Susceptibles is a good, old-fashioned ghost story set in the present. A group of people – about a third of the population of a city – fall unconscious, and when they come round, it becomes apparent that they can see things, ghosts that had always been there but had remained unseen. There are four interlinking storylines, and lots of chills and surprises along the way. I really just wanted to write something other than zombies, and this book was a great way to do that.

Tells us about your book. Deathdealers.

Ahhh, Deathdealers is the first book in a series involving Alex Winterbone, a private investigator with terrible luck and a strange magnetism towards uncanny cases. Alex is recently divorced, a recovering alcoholic, and severely pissed off at the world for the hand he's been dealt. He would have been military if he didn't suffer terrible asthma, so he opted for a life investigating cheating spouses and tracking down missing pets. Things change, however, when a woman arrives at his office and asks for his help investigating the mysterious death of her sister. I love Alex Winterbone simply because he's not a nice person, and yet he has to help people in order to get paid.

What led you to write horror?

I've always loved the genre. As a young boy I would read Shaun Hutson, Richard Laymon and Stephen King. Everyone else my age was prattling on about Teenage Mutant Fucking Turtles or WWF Wrestling, and I was digging into IT or The Woods Are Dark. I knew that I was going to write when I was older, though at that point I wanted to be a film-critic. When I was thirteen, my mom gave me an Olympia typewriter – you remember? One font, and only black or red to choose from? - and I would sit up in my room and clack away for hours, writing silly space-operas and fan-fiction. I used to write it in a way that I could pull the paper out, staple it and fold it so it looked like a real book, and then I'd draw a cover, which would be terrible. I don't know what ever happened to those little pamphlets, but I would love to see one now.

How did Crowded Quarantine Publications come to be?

My wife and I decided to start CQP in early 2011, and we knew exactly the kind of thing we wanted to do. I had decided to put together and edit a few anthologies, and the best way for us to do that was by starting a company. Then we decided to open up for novel and novellas, and we started receiving some great work; too good to pass on. And so CQP was born, and it's going from strength-to-strength thanks to the awesome authors sending us great stuff.

Crowded Quarantine Publications is really coming along quite nicely. What kind of awesome titles can we look forward too from CQP?

We have Tales For The Toilet, which is an unthemed anthology, coming out in October. “Lust”, a novella by Douglas Vance Castagna is released on 10th September. Craig Saunders' novella, “The Walls Of Madness” is released on 15th October, and then moving into 2013 we have Ty Schwamberger's “Last Night Out”, Val Muller's novel “Faulkner's Apprentice”, Aurelio Rico Lopez III's second novella through us, “Cry Wolf”, and of course your wonderful Zombies-On-Everest novella “Smell Of The Dead.” And we have a few others we are just waiting on contracts from, which will be announced accordingly. It's been a very busy year, and next year promises to be even bigger and better.

Thank you, Adam for being here today!

Thanks for having me, Dale

Adam's Bio:
Life for Adam revolves around writing. If he isn't writing, then he is usually found with a book in his hand. He is also a true Metal-head who loves to play the guitar and has an overwhelming collection of music that make his wife’s ears bleed. He is a self-professed connoisseur of all films but with a disturbing enthusiasm for everything horror under his skin, quite literally, thanks to his other passion of tattoos and tattooing. Adam’s body boasts over 50 tattoos (some of which were inked by himself) with his back being a showcase for all the modern classic horror characters thanks to his brother, Clint’s, tattoo skills.

Questions For The Author

Now that I have a few short stories on the market, I'm already getting the classic questions.

1) “What's your book about?”

2) “Can I have a copy?”

3) “Why do you write horror?”

4) “Where do you get your ideas?”

5) “Can I pick up a copy at Wal-Mart?”

To address these questions:

1) "What's my book about?" My short stories appear in collections called anthologies, with the exception of a sing short I have out now Amazon, DARK DWELLINGS. In the anthologies, I'm along side authors just as skilled, or better, and a lot of them are freaking amazing.

My story, POTATO MAN, appears in the anthology, Grindhouse, which is about a serial killer who has figured out how to manipulate the supernatural world. This isn't something I go into a much explanation about since it's a short story, and it is a grindhouse style story. Anyways, at the beginning this chainsaw wielding maniac is shot to death by the police. All but two of his victims are dead, the ones who weren't so lucky lost their hands to the chainsaw wielding maniac, and the hands are missing. He comes back after the survivors, killing some more on his way, and to make matters worse, the severed hands that were never found come back.

It's a crazy tale, but I had a freaking blast writing it.

2) "Can you have a copy?" With the exception of contests I hold online from time to time, all copies must be bought. Sorry guys, this is a business and if I gave copies away (assuming that I had the extra copies, this book or any other) no one would make the money they earned. Between long hours behind a keyboard on my end, and all the other writers who labored on their stories, and the hard work that goes into formatting a book, it wouldn't be fair. There might be future promotions, but I'm not clear on this. Over all, my stories, and all others, are written to be sold.
3) “Why do I write horror?” Well for one, it is fun. I grew up on horror stories though most of them were movies, and a lot those movies were from Stephen King novels and short stories. Along with Gray Brandner's The Howling. Although when I first started writing I wrote crime fiction and thriller, there was always a part of me wanting to write horror. I have a thing for scaring people, creeping them out, or just straight terrifying them. And with horror I'm allowed to do that, they give me permission to the moment they crack open a Dale Eldon story. Although I like other genres, and I'll write whatever I want to write depending on the story.

4) "Where do I get my ideas?" Like most writers, they come from a strange looking muscle called (are you ready for this?), THE BRAIN. An idea will come to me, and I explore that idea. I play what-if games. And I'm sick and twisted to my characters, so those games make for great brain-storming. But sometimes an idea comes to you from actual people or places. Some of my ideas will come from an actor, or a line in a movie or TV show. Or two different movies or TV shows. The story will in a sense write it self in my brain. Or my favorite, people at work. Some from the bosses, fellow employees, or even better, the customers. I put up with a lot of crap from them because I'm in fast food they think I am their personal slave since that is my job. And they love to abuse that right. When I am really peeved, to the point I want to light them all on fire, some the best ideas come to me.

Lucky for them I'm a writer. So it's fictitious people who bite it. There is a rule, never tick off an author. They will kill you in their stories. This is very true. And to make matters worse, I'm a horror author, killing people in stories is the name of the game. That, and mind-screwing them. I get play head games with all of the characters involved. And did I mention that it's fun?

5) "Can you pick up any of my stuff at Wal-Mart?" Oh boy, do I wish. I'm not Amanda Hocking, any stories or books that I write won't be found at most retailers, however, they can be found on my author profile at AMAZON. One of these days, my work will appear at Wally-World, and brick and mortar stores. But for now, only online.

I'm sure these questions will become more and more interesting, and I will answer this one in a preemptive strike, NO, nothing that I write will EVER be like Twilight! I do, however, refer to it in some stories. It's kinda hard to write vampire stories without some reference to sparkling in the sun. If I ever write paranormal romance, I will still keep the vampires monsters. Because, that is what they are.
While you are here, feel free to check out my Amazon Author Page, give it a “LIKE” and scroll down and click on Grindhouse. Crowded Quarantine Publications now has the anthology in both, Kindle and Print. Even if my short, POTATO MAN isn't for you, there 16 other chilling tales in this twisted tome.
Keep reminding yourself, it's only a book...It's only a book...It's only a book

From some of the best writers in the genre comes this all new collection of exciting, exploitative and downright nasty tale. From bug infestations to body mutilations, no stone is left unturned by these sick and twisted minds. Marvel, if you will, at the evil teddies; try to remain calm as the babysitter gets more than just free food and a nice tip; come out from behind the sofa and finish the tale about the flesh-eating clowns; regulate your breathing as the pole-dancer learns some new tricks. It's all inside this terrifying anthology, and much, much more.

REVIEWS
"Not for children, a truly sinister work from the imagination of the author, Dark Dwellings is a horror story: A classic horror story in contemporary times.
"It is claustrophobic, gory in places, revels in it's own dark scares, and will chill the reader to the bone...
... and not much scares me." ~Mark Taylor, author of, THE HUMAN CONDITION
"House of the Macabre is built in an old warehouse and provides a few scares for the price of admission. But this cheap establishment is the dwelling place for genuine horrors. Aaron Stanson will go from mocked-up zombie, to fleeing prey from the twisted diminutive clown known as Gummy.

"Who or what is this silent figure with painted face and snaking tongue? A trip into the monster’s lair will reveal a grisly scene and an awful truth.
